JUSTICE FOR IMMIGRANTS
Through JFI, CIS-NYC seeks to challenge injustice, educate our constituency to equip members to be their own advocates, and disseminate vital information via outreach, workshops, and social media. A major component of JFI is monthly Know Your Rights workshops. We partner with community, religious, and government organizations to produce these workshops on subjects of importance to immigrants. Members also participate in advocacy on a city, state, and national level for immigration services and rights and attend bi-weekly membership meetings where they share and learn about important resources and services.
In addition to our monthly workshops, we offer tailored Know Your Rights workshops for schools, faith-based organizations, and community-based organizations. These workshops cover critical topics relevant to the communities we serve in both English and Spanish. Justice for Immigrants has a membership of nearly 300 individuals who receive and share important information and resources, participate in monthly meetings and workshops, develop leadership skills, and engage in advocacy for a more humane immigration system. “After I participated in one of CIS-NYC’s DACA Clinics, I had no idea the doors of opportunities CIS-NYC was opening for me. A few weeks after, I was invited to their JFI Leadership Program, which gave me broader insights into civic education, leadership and community organization building. I now attend monthly JFI meetings where we seek to empower immigrants, their families and reach out to allies, through educational workshops, informative sessions, and address solutions to issues in our community. “I came from Mexico City to the United States in 2002, when I was 4 years old. I came without knowing English or how the education system worked. Ever since I was in kindergarten, I wanted to be a lawyer. Being part of an underrepresented community, I want to speak up for people who are voiceless. I remember going to Albany in 7th grade with Cabrini to speak with politicians to pass the NY State Dream Act. Cabrini allowed me to see that immigrants have a voice and that they can make a change.”
