Our Mission
Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) provides essential services to immigrants in the spirit of Mother Cabrini, patron saint of immigrants and founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Our mission is to empower immigrants, their families, and their communities through education, access to essential services, civic participation, and community building. We strive to work together with the immigrant community to create a more inclusive society by fostering justice, dignity, and respect.
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF CIS-NYC
In 2024, CIS-NYC celebrated 25 years of serving immigrant families. To mark our anniversary, we held a beautiful celebration with nearly 200 of our clients, supporters, and donors, where we honored Sr. Pietrina Raccuglia, MSC, and Alex Avitabile with the Heart of Cabrini Award. Check out the photos here!
In 1999, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus identified a need. In the spirit of Mother Cabrini, they took immediate action to address that need out of a small space in the Lower East Side. Over the past 25 years, CIS-NYC has grown into a well-regarded, multi-service organization, all while remaining deeply rooted in our community and the Cabrinian Charism. Learn more about our history and mission in the video below.
MESSAGE FROM OUR BOARD CHAIR
IMMIGRATION LEGAL SERVICES
In 2024, our legal and social services staff collaborated to provide 645 comprehensive immigration legal consultations. During these consultations, clients were screened for immigration relief, informed about their rights, legal options, and the legal process, and assessed for their social services needs.
We opened 445 new immigration cases and successfully filed 403 cases, providing holistic support to our clients throughout each step of the grueling and often discouraging legal immigration process.
50 families reunited
193 work authorizations obtained
164 cases opened to protect our most vulnerable immigrants
37 new citizens
896K saved in legal representation fees
JOSSELIN’S STORY
“I am heartily grateful to all the members of the organization that I have known for more than two years and that I will always remember with affection.”

SOCIAL SERVICES
CIS-NYC’s Social Services staff meet our clients where they are at, collaborating with them to ensure that they feel supported and empowered as they navigate life in an unfamiliar country. We provide a comprehensive system of support for our clients through case management, counseling, group sessions, family activities, and educational assistance.
Case Management: 444 clients supported in navigating services related to healthcare, employment, education, nutrition, mental health, and housing.
Supportive Counseling: 36 people provided with counseling over the course of 386 counseling sessions.
Groups: Clients build a sense of community and mutual support through participating in groups with other immigrants. In 2024, we held a women’s group, a parenting group, a nutrition group, and a recreational activity group. 115 clients participated in these groups.
SOCIAL SERVICES PROGRAM
SPECIAL INITIATIVES & ACTIVITIES
Angel Fund Scholarship Program
In addition to tuition assistance, recipients benefit from a strong, established relationship with case managers, who provide concrete assistance that helps them navigate their educational and personal developments. In the Spring 2024 semester, we distributed $6,234 in scholarships to 8 students, and in the Fall 2024 semester, we distributed $10,650 to 15 students total.
Immigrant Family Program
Our Family Program provides a range of recreational activities and events that aim to combat the isolation experienced by many of our clients. In 2024, we hosted several gatherings and celebrations to bring together our clients, including a summer barbecue with 68 clients in collaboration with our Justice for Immigrants Program!
In December, we hosted a Christmas celebration for 38 immigrant families, which allowed immigrant children the opportunity to celebrate a treasured holiday and receive donated gifts. We distributed 219 toys, and each child went home with a new winter coat.
Lastly, we took 27 clients to the New York Aquarium and 28 clients to a Rockettes show. Forty-seven clients enjoyed a fun day at a waterpark over the summer!
Enrichment Program
In collaboration with Talia Varonos, an educator and founder of Thinkery Inc., our social services team introduced an enrichment program hosted during after-school hours that provided homework help for children while serving as a supportive space for parents who lack access to childcare. Parents were also provided with basic English as a Second Language classes through this program. There were 13 participants in 2024.
AMADOU’S STORY
“I used to think of Cabrini as just a place to learn a few tools, but I ended up getting so much more. CIS is very involved. You don’t say, ‘I helped you with this,’ you say, ‘You did this, and we worked together.’ That makes all the difference.”
LETICIA’S STORY
“I learned to set boundaries with others, to say "enough is enough."... I'm not afraid to express myself. I'm learning to love myself more. Emotionally, I'm improving a lot.”
FOOD PANTRY
CIS-NYC’s Food Pantry provides healthy, well-balanced packages of food to clients from our local community, ensuring that their most basic needs are met. Our pantry is located at the Church of the Good Shepherd, where we distribute food on a weekly basis in partnership with the Church community.
1,554 packages of food distributed on average per month.
An average of 928 families in need served each month.
Over 450,000 meals worth of food distributed
Making Healthy Food More Accessible
Since 2023, we have delivered food to clients who are unable to come to the pantry due to disability through a partnership with DoorDash. In May 2024, we started another meal delivery program focused on Inwood called “Inwood Meals on Heels.” Through these programs, we were able to feed 72 clients in 2024, delivering a total of 659 food packages.
CLAUDIA’S STORY
“[the CIS-NYC Pantry distributes] the most food, including different vegetables…Nobody does it like them.”
JUSTICE FOR IMMIGRANTS
The Justice for Immigrants Program (JFI) aims to engage our multigenerational immigrant membership in educating their communities, developing leadership skills, building community resilience, and advocating for a more humane immigration system.
Over 250 community members participated in JFI activities throughout 2024. These activities included:
• 43 community events and educational workshops on important topics such as healthcare access, housing rights, financial literacy, and basic rights in interactions with immigration agents.
• 20 membership meetings where members learned about campaigns, shared resources, supported one another, and built power as a community.
• Participation in campaigns including: Coverage4All, the Working Families Tax Credit, the Unemployment Bridge Program, the Access to Representation Act, New York For All, and SNAP 4 All. Members attended 17 campaign and advocacy activities such as rallies, marches, creative actions, press conferences, trips to Albany, and meetings with elected officials.
Fostering Immigrant Leaders
We began 2024 with the second half of our annual leadership development program, where 6 community members learned about federal and State legislative processes and how to advocate for change at the different levels of government. They were able to put this learning into practice when they went to Albany to speak with State elected officials about various campaigns. We held a second session of this program in October, where 7 new participants completed the program and participated in the launch of the Unemployment Bridge Program campaign.
NORMA’S STORY
“Our voices matter, and they can be heard. I will keep carrying the needs of my community to elected officials. I’m not afraid. Our community takes care of us.”
SPECIAL PARTNERSHIPS
In 2024, CIS-NYC partnered with various organizations within the community to carry out our mission and values and expand our collective impact.
Rompiendo Las Aguas On Radio Maria
Rompiendo Las Aguas is a radio program supported by CIS-NYC that began broadcasting on Radio Maria in 2015. The radio program focuses on bringing information and empowerment to listeners, and in particular, immigrants. Rompiendo Las Aguas is hosted by Angel Diaz, who is a community leader and board member at CIS-NYC. The program airs every Thursday live on Radio Maria NYC at 9 am and is rebroadcasted online by the Red of Radios Catolicas.
SOLIDARITY PROJECT WITH SANT’EGIDIO
In 2022, CIS-NYC established a formal partnership with the Community of Sant’Egidio to establish a homeless outreach program. This program provides individuals experiencing homelessness in Midtown Manhattan with weekly meals, accompaniment, and support in accessing essential resources and services. In 2024, volunteers delivered 20,000 meals to around 300 individuals. Additionally, Sant'Egidio provided 100 individuals with monthly support and advocacy, helping them access identification, benefits, and housing.
