Translation interns at Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) serve a vital role in helping our agency meet the needs of our Mandarin, Cantonese, and Fujianese-speaking clients. In addition to offering legal services on a sliding fee scale for immigrants, CIS-NYC operates one of the largest food pantries in the Lower East Side. Interns will translate for clients speaking a variety of Chinese dialects during food distribution hours, as well as developing Chinese versions of our flyers, brochures, and other types of documents for various CIS-NYC programs.
This opportunity offers translation interns a chance to build their resumes and practice oral and written skills in a real world environment, while doing meaningful work for low income New Yorkers. Interns will sharpen their conversation and interpersonal skills at our food pantry, which serves hundreds of clients every week. They will learn about current immigration issues, and work alongside professionals who have dedicated their lives to nonprofit and social justice work.
- Speak either Mandarin or Cantonese fluently AND are proficient in written Chinese.
- Commit to being physically present during food distribution hours every Tuesday from 8:30AM-12:30PM for a period of 10 weeks.
- Dedicate 1-3 additional hours per week translating for Cabrini Immigrant Services social workers, Justice for Immigrants campaign, and English for Speakers of Other Languages program. These hours will be more flexible, and arranged according to the intern’s personal schedule.
- Embrace the mission of CIS-NYC, which is to care for the members of our community who are immigrants or food insecure regardless of age, race, ethnicity, country of origin, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or documentation status.
This unpaid position may be renewed through the consent of the intern and Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC.
